Helen Ed

Helen Ed was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Barney and Clara Long on March 22, 1922. She was the youngest of their 13 children and grew up in the Camden area of North Minneapolis. She married William Ed, and they bought/built and sold several homes in the Pine City area. For many years, they made their home on the lower Snake River and continued to buy and sell homes in the community. In 1958 they established a bowling alley in Pine City, calling it Pine City Lanes. Later they sold their home on the river and purchased one of the houses on 8th Street in Pine City they had sold while in the real estate business. William died in 1987, and Helen continued to live to in their home until the time of her death. Helen loved to crochet and knit all kinds of hats, slippers, and hoods. She also enjoyed reading and having company. Helen was an advocate for reading books; She would say "Books are so much better than movies, they pull you in and you are there!" Her outgoing personality endeared her to everyone she knew, but especially to members of her family. Helen Ed died unexpectedly on January 30, 2011 at her home in Pine City, Minnesota. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Clara Long, her husband, William Ed, 12 siblings, and nephew Howard Hopkins. A graveside service will be conducted by Helen’s nephew, William Hopkins, at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City; 11:00 A.M. Saturday (5/20/11) with a time of visitation one hour prior. The inurnment will be in the Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City. Services are entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service, Swanson Chapel, Pine City, Minnesota.
