Carol Jean Freeman Shatava, age 89, a life-long resident of the West Rock Creek and Pine City areas, died Sunday (2/13/2011) at the Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City.
Carol was born on August 21, 1921, to John and Minnie (Behrendt) Freeman at their farm home. She was baptized at West Rock Lutheran Church and later confirmed at Pine Grove Lutheran Church. Carol and her brother Harvey attended school at West Rock Grade School, and Carol graduated from Pine City High School in May, 1940.
Carol attended nursing school and worked for many years as an LPN, first at Lakeside Hospital for Dr. Nethercott and for 14 years at Hillcrest Nursing Home of Rush City. Carol was a very caring and thoughtful nurse to everyone she cared for.
She married Frank Shatava on June 28, 1944.
Carol loved to travel and meet new friends and took many trips with friends over the years. She enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. She was a wonderful and loving caretaker to her mother Minnie in her later years. Carol lived on the Freeman family farm until recent years when her health declined. She lived at Lakeside Nursing Home from June of 2007 until the time of her death.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, John & Minnie Freeman, her brother Harvey Freeman, sister-in-law Ethel Freeman, and nephew Randy Freeman.
She is survived by her nephew Gary (Sue) Freeman of Las Cruces, New Mexico, her niece Linda Defenbaugh of Pine City, great-nephews Jon Freeman of Jackson, Wyoming, and Mike Defenbaugh of Pine City, great-nieces Megan Freeman of Chicago, Illinois, and Kayla Defenbaugh of Pine City.
Rev. Vicki VanderVegt will officiate at funeral services; 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (2/16/11) at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City.
A time of visitation and reviewal is planned for Tuesday evening from 4-7 p.m at the Swanson Chapel in Pine City and Wednesday morning prior to the funeral at the funeral chapel.
The interment will be in the Birchwood Cemetery in Pine City.
