Mr. Al Dusek of Pine City died Wednesday (3/23/11) at the Fairview Lakes Regional Medical Center in Wyoming, Minnesota at the age of 86 years.
Born July 30th, 1924 in Owatonna, oldest of 4 children born to Fred & Mary (Kubat) Dusek. Al spoke only Czech until he learned English in grammar school. He graduated from Owatonna High School in 1943 and married Margie Mollenhauer on October 1st 1946. They were married almost 65 years.
He was a builder of custom homes in Owatonna with his father-in-law and brother-in-law until 1960. He and Margie purchased the Schwartzwald Motel in Pine City (1960-66) after-which he resumed his home-building career as well as being the assessor for Pine City, following up with many years in real estate.
He survived triple bypass surgery in his 50’s and was well known (along with Margie) to log many miles walking around town to keep his heart healthy. In retirement, they owned, managed, and maintained rental properties. He was a long time member of ZCBJ lodge in Owatonna – the Czech fraternal organization. In 1997 he and Margie visited the Czech Republic. While there, they were able to visit the homes where his ancestors were born and lived.
He was a perfectionist, liked detail and always made sure everything was done right. In addition to his carpentry skills, he was a musician – learned to play the accordian and organ by ear and was also a talented artist. He loved and adored his three great granddaughters – Addison, Ellory and Hannah.
Al Dusek is survived by his wife Margie; children Vicki Johnson and husband Dennis of Arden Hills, Tom Dusek and wife Dawn of Newell, South Dakota, grandchildren: Kelly Dusek and wife Sarah of Rush City, Travis Johnson and wife Melanie of Lino Lakes, 3 great grandchildren; brothers George (Ada) Dusek of Owatonna, MN, Robert (Zanobia) Dusek of Tuscon, AZ., Sister Martha (Rudy) Stursa of Owatonna, Mn and many nieces and nephews.
Rev. Vicki VanderVegt will officiate at Al’s funeral service; 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City. A time of visitation and reviewal is scheduled for one and ½ hours prior to the service.
Al Dusek will be interred in the Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City at a later date.
