Robert John Schlagel, 81, of Pine City, passed peacefully to eternal life on August 1, 2011. He spent his last days surrounded by family and friends.
Bob was born January 7, 1930, to George and Frances (Johannes) Schlagel in DeGraff, MN. He grew up on a farm between DeGraff and Murdock and graduated from Murdock High School. He entered the U. S. Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in November of 1952. He married Rosalie Sikora in February of 1952, in Madison Ill. They came back to Minnesota and Bob went to work for Northwestern Bell, in Olivia, Jackson and Marshall Minnesota. Rosalie Schlagel passed to eternal life in April of 1968. He worked for Northwestern Bell for forty years, retiring in 1992. Robert was mayor of Marshall, MN for fifteen years, from 1973-1988.
Robert is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Phyllis (Haberman) Schlagel, daughters Catherine (Charles Freiss) Schlagel of Marshall, MN, Julie (James) Norman of Superior, WI, and son Robert (Kathryn) of New Hope, MN. Three grandchildren, Parker Freiss, Adeline (Addie) Schlagel and Thor James Norman. Sisters Genevieve (Genny) Eisenrich of Bemidji, MN. and Rita Ward of Minnetonka, MN and brother Peter Schlagel, of Mendota Heights.He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances Schlagel, grandson Robert John Schlagel, sister Margaret Bouta and brother Edward Schlagel. He delighted in his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, a good Twin’s baseball game and politics.Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 5, at Immaculate Conception Church, Pine City, MN with Msgr. Aleksander Suchan, officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, August 4, at Swanson Funeral Chapel, with 7 p.m. prayer. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church in St. Anthony’s Commons. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Calvary Cemetery, Beroun. Arrangements are with the Swanson Funeral Chapel, Pine City.
