Mark Joseph Shatava, age 42 of West Lafayette, Indiana died Saturday evening, October 1, 2011,  at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a lengthy illness.  He was born July 2, 1969, to Joseph and Anda (Kalnins) Shatava in Lafayette, Indiana.Mark grew up and attended school in West Lafayette, Indiana, graduating from Harrison High School in 1987.  He then went on to enroll in a two year course of mechanics.   While in school he was active in various sports programs and later in his life he retained his interest in sports.On July 19, 1999, Mark was united in marriage to Karen Khatter.  They made their home in West Lafayette and Mark worked at Sears for several years.  He was later employed at REA Magnet Wire where he worked for a period of 20 years.Mark and Karen’s family grew to include their two children, Kelsey and Kadin,  who were especially close to his heart.  His extended family was also dearly loved and there were many trips made over the years between Indiana and Minnesota.  He was very fond of his niece and nephew, Morgan and Blake Burnau.Mark enjoyed sports and fishing, however, his passion was snowmobiling.  The Indiana climate is not always well suited for snowmobiles, and there were many trips to Michigan, as well as Minnesota, to enjoy the snow.Mark is survived by his wife, Karen, and children Kelsey and Kadin Shatava, all of West Lafayette. He is also survived by his mother and step-father: Anda and Clark Kick of Pine City, MN; sister:  Sarma (Phillip) Burnau of Lino Lakes, MN; niece Morgan and nephew Blake; mother-in-law:  Dorothy Khatter of West Lafayette; uncle: Jim Shatava of Pine City; step brothers and sister:  Tracey Kick of the Twin Cities, Douglas (Kathy) Kick of Shakopee, MN, and Jeff (Laurel) Kick of Texas; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and best friend Eddie Butler of Indiana.  He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Shatava.Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City with the Reverend Vicki Vander Vegt and the Reverend Ron Boettner officiating.  Music was provided by Glenna Reierson and Joyce Benson.  Casket bearers were Lyndon Peterson, Phillip Burnau, Randy Koester, Greg Janssen, Dennis Shatava, Jamie Janssen, and Eddie Butler.  Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette, Indiana, following the funeral service in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Arrangements are entrusted to the  Funeral & Cremation Service, Swanson Chapel, Pine City, Minnesota.
