Emma Haug passed away Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Rush City, at 102 years of age.
Emma was born May 23, 1909, the oldest of seven children born to Joseph Roubinek and Anna Tone Roubinek, then living in the Beroun area. At a young age, the family moved to a farm east of Pine City where she lived until her marriage to Milton Haug in 1931. She lived at the Haug farm east of Pine City until she moved to the Golden Living Center in 2005.
Emma attended the Milburn Country School and enjoyed the annual reunion until very recently. Coming from a musical family, she learned to play the piano and accordian at an early age. In addition to raising three children, she enjoyed country life and was kept very busy growing a large garden, preserving foods, raising chickens, and selling eggs. When Emma grew cucumbers and green beans for the Stokely Company, the children earned money by helping her harvest the crops. Emma was known as a wonderful cook and baker and received many prizes for her entries at the Pine County Fair.
Younger people of today can only imagine how much work was involved with caring for a family and maintaining a home before the modern conveniences of today. For many years, Emma was a member of the St. Croix Homemakers Club, and she and Milton were active in The Grange Organization. Emma's very favorite pastime, both summer and winter was fishing. Often on summer days she would take her cane pole and can of worms and trek to her favorite fishing hole. She almost always brought back a fresh catch for a delicious meal. Emma enjoyed seeing the children come at Halloween for the popcorn balls she made. In her later years, she often told visitors, "Fishing was my best sport." Emma thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people and will be missed by all who knew her.
Emma is survived by her children: Melford Haug of Pine City, Martin Haug of Pine City, Diane (Wayne) Baker of Pine City; grandchildren: Yvette (Wes) Ferguson of Ft Collins, Colorado, Yvonne (Brian) Hoop of Bloomington, Illinois, Darcey (Edna) Baker of Rapid City, South Dakota; great grandchildren: Jay Ferguson, Drew Ferguson, Tasha Baker, Travis Baker, Emma Hoop; great great grandchildren: Cate Ferguson, Cora Ferguson; six step-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, brother Richard Roubinek of Pine City, and sister-in-law Dorothy Ruby of Pine City.
