Mabel Thieman

Mabel Gladys Thieman was born July 20, 1913 in Lankin, North Dakota to John & Mary (Gardner) Peil. At an early age, Mabel and her family moved to a farm east of Pine City. She married Richard Thieman in 1930 at a ceremony at the Pine County Fairgrounds Grandstand. Several area businesses provided gifts for the lucky couple! Mabel and Richard made their home on a farm east of Rock Creek where they raised their five children. Mabel was an industrious person, raising her family and also working at the Hillcrest Nursing Home, Lakeside Nursing Home and doing home health care for individuals in need. She loved cooking and baking; making fried bread, dumplings and sauerkraut as favorite treats. She also loved to make kolaches; prune and poppyseed and fruit cakes which she would provide for many family members. Mabel’s hobbies centered around traveling with Richard, playing cards such as canasta and 500 and enjoying flowers, especially roses from Richard’s garden. The last years of Mabel’s life was spent living at the Johnson Apartments, Halter Pines, Golden Horizens in Pine City, MN and finally Esentia Health Care Center in Sandstone, MN. While living at the Johnson Apartments Mabel and Richard were awarded a cash prize for their lovely garden and decorations to their apartment. Mabel died Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Essentia Health in Sandstone at the age of 98 years. She is survived by her children Jackie “Tootie” Geretschlaeger of Pine City, Robert Thieman of Faribault, MN., Denny (Ellen) Thieman of Cottonwood, AZ., Larry (Ruth) Thieman of Grand Rapids, MN., 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Preceding Mabel in death are her parents John & Mary Peil, husband Richard Thieman, son Dicky Thieman, son-in-law Donald Geretschlaeger, 19 siblings, 2 grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Rev. Glen Kleppe will officiate at memorial services; 11:00 a.m. Thursday (12/8/11) at the Zion Lutheran Church in Pine City, MN. A time of visitation is planned from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. A spring interment is planned in the Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City. Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church in Pine City. MN.
