Roger Van Prooien DVM, age 81, of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin where he had been a patient for the past 11 days.
He was born on October 6, 1930, in Luverne, Minnesota, a son of the late Tony and Ethel Star Van Prooien. Roger graduated from Pine City High School in 1948, then attended North Dakota State and received a Degree in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1955.
He married Ruth Wyckoff and the couple resided in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin where as a team they owned and operated Sunset Resort for as long as they could. She preceded him in death on September 8, 2007. Roger owned and operated the Van Prooien Veterinary Clinic in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin for 50 years, retiring in 2005. On July 31, 2009, he married Ginny Hamm (Klumb) in Sheboygan. The couple has resided in Sheboygan Falls since their marriage.
Roger was a member of AVMA Society. He enjoyed his animals, gardening, hunting and loved flying his own airplane.
Roger is survived by his wife, Ginny of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin; sister Linda Van Prooien of Bloomington, Minnesota; sister-in-law Shirley of North Potomac, Maryland; two nieces, five step-children, and several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents Tony and Ethel Van Prooien, wife Ruth Wyckoff, and brother Donald Van Prooien.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City with a memorial visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Birchwood Cemetery in Pine City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Roger’s name for the Sheboygan County Humane Society.
