Glenn C. Karas formerly of Pine City, died Friday evening, November 30th at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. He was 89 years old.
Glenn C. Karas was born on February 1, 1923 in Braham, Minnesota to Joe and Frances Marie (Toman) Karas. He grew up on the family farm east of Pine City on government road where he lived with his parents and sister. Glenn attended district #30 Country School and graduated from Pine City High School in 1940.
After school he worked locally as a butter churner. He then entered the United States Army in April of 1943. He served in the Normandy invasion, in northern France, in the Rhineland, Ardennes and in other parts of Central Europe as a gunner with the light artillery. While in Europe he received a Purple Heart for wounds received in September of 1944. He served through the conclusion of WWII and received his discharge in October of 1945. Glenn worked for a short time on the island of Guam, then in a lumber mill in Oregon before returning to Pine City where he worked in the Pine City Coop Creamery.
He purchased a farm southwest of Pine City where he farmed until the early 1970's. Then he moved off of the farm in 2004 and into Pine City where he lived until last January when he moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. Glenn lived here until his death last Friday evening, November 30th at the age of 89.
Glenn enjoyed farming. He enjoyed going to the sales barn to meet friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Novak-Milliren VFW post # 4258 of Pine City as well as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pine City.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Frances (Toman) Karas and his sister Dorothy Karas.
He is survived by many cousins and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of PIne City with Reverend Harry Lichey officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Church. Interment with Military Honors will be at Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City.
