Larry Thompson of Cambridge, MN died Friday February 15, 2013 at the V.A. Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN at the age of 66 years. Larry struggled for many years with M.S.
Larry was born and raised in Willow River, Minnesota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1967-1970. He was in Vietnam from 1968-1969 where he was an operating engineer. Larry was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal - Campaign Medal and Rifle Medal. He flew the flag every day and was so proud to have served his country.
Larry married his wife Vonnie on July 27, 1970 in Watertown, South Dakota. They had two children Roxy and Corey. They started their family in Willow River and then moved to Cambridge where they have resided for the last 30 years.
Larry was a bricklayer by trade. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis forty years ago but it never slowed him down. His interests were traveling west for the winters and he loved to hunt and fish until it became too difficult. He was a member of DAV, the American Legion and Cambridge Lutheran Church.
Playing cards with family was always a joy for Larry as was going to the casino. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his beautiful eyes. He was such a big part of the family life, he will be greatly missed by family, special friends Jim & Carol Dayton, and Jerry & Joy Novak.
Larry is survived by his wife Vonnie, daughter Roxy Towery of Moose Lake, son Corey Thompson of Cambridge, grandchildren Tanner, Hanna, Layna, Robert and Trevor. Larry is also survived by his siblings Doug Thompson of Phoenix, AZ, Marlene Hannafin of Carson City, NV, Ronald (Jan) Thompson of Fernley, NV, Linda (Ralph) Hedberg of Beaverton, OR, Cheri Van Sickle of Elk River, sisters-in-law Lorraine Thompson of Willow River, Patty (Carl) Hischer of Willow River, Susie (Kim) Newman of Barnum, Myra Michog of Rush City, Tammy Hack of Willow River, brother-in-law Brian (Diane) Lundborg of Willow River and many nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Ted & Darlene Thompson, grandson Dakota, siblings Morry Thompson, Donna Stockamp and sister-in-law Linda Wright.
Rev. Jon Pederson will officiate at funeral services; 11:00 a.m. Thursday (2/21/13) at the Cambridge Lutheran Church in Cambridge, MN. with a time of visitation and reviewal one hour prior at the church. Music will be provided by Joy Novak. Casket bearers include Corey Thompson, Tanner Thompson, Brian Lundborg, Carl Hischer, Jerry Novak and Jim Dayton.
There will also be visitation Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Olson Chapel in Rush City.
The interment will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Willow River, MN on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will be provided by Popek-Kostecky American Legion Post # 163 and the Hanson-Anderson American Legion Post # 361.
