Allan Johnson of Rush City, long time Rush City and Pine City home builder and cabinet maker, died Saturday morning (2/23/13) at the Golden Living Center in Rush City at the age of 81 years.
Allan was born June 28, 1931 in Rush City, MN to Peter and Jennie Johnson. He graduated from Rush City High School in 1949. On August 5, 1950, Allan married Donna Mae Norlund at Fish Lake Lutheran Church in Stark. Allan and Donna lived in Rush City their entire lives.
Allan's interests included traveling, hunting, bowling, golfing, antique collecting and visiting with friends. He also claimed to have chosen a profession (carpentry) that was more of a hobby than a job for him. He built approximately 100 new homes and remodeled close to 300 homes as well as built countless cabinets and furniture items. His love of woodworking was such that he never completely retired form a career that extended over 60 years. Allan also took great pride in his work at the First Lutheran Cemetery where he volunteered as sexton; maintaining cemetery records, marking out graves meticulously and working to keep the cemetery attractive. Allan also used his first job skills of masonry to set many markers and monuments in many cemeteries in this area and beyond.
Allan was a very talented, hard working and humble individual. His honest work ethic and building craftsmanship was well known. Throughout the years, Allan maintained scores of very satisfied homeowners.
Always wearing a smile, Allan was friendly, easy-going person who never spoke badly of anyone. He had a large number of friends who were tremendously loyal to him and each other. The family of Allan Johnson is extremely grateful to this wonderful group of people. Allan will be missed but never forgotten.
Allan's memberships included: the Rush Point Leisure Club and the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rush City.
He is survived by daughters and son-in law Charlene (Roger) Meixner of Colfax, WI, Denise Johnson of Darien, WI, son and daughter-in-law Brad (Maureen) Johnson of Walker, MN; grandchildre: Cortney (Justin) Astin of Whitewater, WI, Samantha Sizemore of Fort Atkinson, WI, Travis Johnson of Roseville, and Brett Johnson of Moorhead; great-grandchildren: Trinity, Josilyn, and Emilio; and good friend Jean Remes of Center City.
Allan is preceded in death by his parents Peter & Jennie Johnson, his wife of 51 years Donna, sisters: Genevieve Golie and Lorraine Goodman-Johnson.
Rev. Laurie O’Shea will officiate a funeral service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (2/27/13) at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush City. A time of visitation and reviewal is planned for Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Olson Chapel in Rush City and one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at the church.
The interment will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in Rush City; the cemetery where Allan volunteered his time as sexton for the past 20 years. Honorary casket bearers include: Rabs Anderson, Andy Anderson, Ron Goodman, Lyle Goodman, Myron Olson, Bob Booth, Fred Engler, Bill Wolff and Darrell Johnson. Active casket bearers will include: Travis Johnson, Brett Johnson, Mel Colliander, Dan Larson, Tim Morris, Dennis Johnson, Marlen Holmberg, and Mike Carroll.
