John Manning Othoudt

April 16, 1925 — October 19, 2013

John Othoudt, age 88 of Pine City, died Saturday evening, October 19th at Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City. John was born on April 16, 1925 in Madelia, Minnesota to Albert & Grace Othoudt. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served for two years and spent time in Okinawa and in the South Pacific Island. He was in the hospital in Hawaii for 6 months due to war related injuries. He married Geraldine Anne Margeson on December 27, 1952. They had 8 children; 4 boys and 4 girls. John was a devoted husband and father. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends. John was a truck driver, taxi driver and a janitor. He owned a strawberry farm in Pine City for years and then drove a school bus for Pine City Schools. Our father was hardworking, strong, loving and gentle. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity. John maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. He was a genial and huggable person that will always be loved and cherished. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Geraldine of Pine City, children: John D. Othoudt Jr. and his wife Tammy of Milaca, Diana Meyer and her husband John of Pine City, Laura Oser and her husband Thomas of New Auburn, Wisconsin, Mary Johnson and her husband Gerald of Pine City; daughter-in-law Deb Othoudt and her fiancé Joe Maroon of Brook Park, 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents Albert & Grace (Menniga) Othoudt, children: Grace Marie, Douglas, Marvin and Stacy; five sisters, one brother and grandchildren: Brian Meyer and Kelly Schermerhorn. Memorial service for John Othoudt will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 24th at Immaculate Conception Church in Pine City. Memorial visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23rd at Swanson Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be provided by Heath-Perkins American Legion Post #51, Novak-Milliren VFW Post #4358 and the Minnesota National Guard.
