Laurel Jean Carey

Laurel Jean Carey was born on December 28, 1929 in Raymond MN to Frederick and Hazel (Luurs) Martens. She lived and attended grammar school in Raymond, Prinsburg and Clara City areas. In the early 1940’s Laurel’s family moved to the Twin Cities, where her parents and her sister Lois worked in various military facilities. Laurel attended Sheridan Junior High School and went to Minneapolis Vocational High School graduating in 1949. While at Vocational High School Laurel met her future husband Bernie Carey and they were married on November 27, 1948. Laurel and Bernie lived in various parts of the Minneapolis area while raising their three sons Bernie, Mike and Marty. In 1974 Laurel and Bernie moved to the Rush City area to build their retirement home. Bernie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1982 and passed away the following year. Laurel and Bernie had been married for 35 years. Following Bernie’s death Laurel stayed in the Rush City area for a few years but got the urge to wander. She moved to Mora, Custer, SD, Finlayson, Arizona, back to Custer, SD, Sandstone, North Branch and finally settled in Wyoming, MN. Laurel worked as a homemaker, writer, cosmetologist/manicurist, massage therapist and was a waitress at the Grant House in Rush City for many years. Laurel passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 21, 2013. Laurel Carey is survived by her sons: Bernie Carey and wife Barbara of Forest Lake, Mike Carey and wife Kim of Stillwater, Marty Carey and wife Suzen of Rush City; 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Blaine Carey of Garrison, sister-in-law Nancy Blanchard of Wayzata, along with many friends and relatives. Laurel was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Hazel Martens, her husband Bernie and a sister Lois Alexander and brother-in-law Jack Alexander. A memorial visitation was held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at the Swanson Chapel in Pine City. The interment will be in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Rush City.
