Duane Joseph Zehms was born December 6, 1930 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Joseph and Elvia (Baker) Zehms. He was raised and graduated high school in Lake Park, Minnesota.
After graduating from high school, Duane joined the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. After getting back stateside, he attended Wahpeton School of Science where he studied automotive mechanics.
In 1955, Duane met Helen Gamer. They were married in Frazee, Minnesota on April 25, 1959 and moved to Roseville, Minnesota where their four children were born. In 1978, they moved to Pine City.
Duane worked for 30 years as a mechanic for the State of Minnesota. In addition, he served in the Army National Guard for 30 years until his honorable discharge in 1990.
He was member of the Heath Perkins American Legion Post # 51 and the Novak-Milliren VFW Post # 4258. He also served on the Honor Guard.
Duane loved deer hunting and fishing, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandkids.
Duane Zehms died February 17, 2014 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis.
Duane is survived by his wife of 54 years Helen Zehms, children: Michael Zehms of Brook Park, John (Therese) Zehms of Ham Lake, Elizabeth (Dennis) Mulvaney of Grasston, Mary Zehms of Isanti; grandchildren: Katheryne (Fiancee Joseph Nordrum) Mulvaney, Lucas Mulvaney, Blake Zehms, Tiffany Zehms; many other relatives and friends.
Duane is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Elvia (Baker) Zehms.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. A time of visitation and reviewal will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral chapel. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
