Edwin "Bud" Charles Peters Jr.

Bud Peters, age 91 of Pine City died Thursday, October 30th in Pine City. Bud was born August 25, 1923 to Edwin and Mae (Cummings) Peters at the family farm near Pokegama Lake. Bud attended and graduated from Grasston High School, lettering in basketball. He worked a variety of jobs in the area and after graduation went with his oldest brother Gene to California to work in the ship yards. He returned to Minnesota in 1943 to enlist in the Army Air Corp. By this time he had met Janet Nestor at the Topic Ballroom. After her graduation, Janet went to Denver to marry Bud at the Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado on June 28, 1944. After being stationed at Almangordo, New Mexico, they returned to Minnesota following Bud's discharge from the service. They bought their first farm in West Rock Creek and began their lives as dairy farmers. Their two daughters Linda and Mary were born while they lived in West Rock Creek. Following Janet's mothers unexpected death in 1951, they moved to the Nestor family farm in Rock Creek and lived there until August 2014, when Bud moved to Sophie's Manor in Pine City. They farmed and raised their daughters on the farm being an active part of the Rock Creek community. After selling their dairy herd, Bud and Janet raised polled hereford cattle. Bud worked as a carpenter while farming for Walt Johnson Construction. He was proud of the things they built especially the new Tobies in Hinckley and many other buildings and homes in the area, as well as his children's homes. Bud was on the Rock Creek Planning Committee for many years, and took a great interest in the development of the community and maintaining the agricultural land in the area. He loved fishing and hunting, especially with his family, friends and grandchildren. The annual Canadian fishing trip with friends or family was the highlight of his summer. Bud loved to play cards, poker, 500 or cribbage, he was always ready for a game. Every Sunday night he and Janet played cards with friends. He loved sports and never missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren or great-grandchildren play hockey, basketball or baseball. He was their biggest fan. We will miss you Bud, but we know you are happy to be with mom. Bud is survived by his daughters: Linda (Larry) Soderbeck of Pine City, Mary (Mark) Skalicky of Beroun; grandchildren: Laura (Terry) Thompson of Baldwin, WI, Michael Skalicky of Florida, James (Maren) Soderbeck of Roberts, WI, Matthew Skalicky of Pine City, Bessie Marie Skalicky of Marshall; great-grandchildren: Tanner & Cameron Thompson, Josephine & Branson Soderbeck, and Garbriel Skalicky, brother Larry (Mary Ellen) Peters of Grasston, sisters-in-law: Betty of Minneapolis, Marge of Tacoma, WA. He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin Sr. & Mae (Cummings) Peters, wife Janet, infant sister Sally, brothers Gene and Bob. A private family inurnment will be held at Birchwood Cemetery of Pine City.
