Margaret Louise “Peggy” Hawley, age 83, passed away January 13, 2015 at Elim Care in Princeton, Minnesota, surrounded by her family.
Peggy was born in Minneapolis on November 7, 1931. She, along with her siblings, spent years in an orphanage in Owatonna. After leaving the orphanage, Peggy lived with a family from Hastings, where she graduated high school.
Later she moved to Minneapolis and worked as a waitress and met her future husband, Philip Hawley. They were married December 13, 1951 in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, moving to Pine City in 1962 and then Rock Creek in 1969. Together they raised eight children.
Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, cooking, singing and baking. She was an active member of the “Pine City Singers”.
Peggy is survived by her children: Philip (Rita) Hawley of Temple, GA, Joyce Harer of Harrison, AR, Don (Joanne) Hawley of Rush City, Garry (Connie) Hawley of Clarksville, TN, Linda Nestrud of Mora, Robert (Krystal) Hawley of Danbury, WI, Mary (Bob) Skarhus of Forest Lake, son-in-law Roger Youngquist of Ogilvie, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents George & Myrtle Schmidt, husband Phil Hawley, daughter Charlene, granddaughter Heather Hawley, son-in-law Roger Nestrud, siblings Viola, Pearl, Clarence, Harvey, Paul, Herman and George.
Reverend Laurie O'Shea will officiate the funeral service for Peggy; 10:30 a.m., Saturday, (1/17/15) at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush City. A time of visitation and reviewal is planned for one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday and also Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Olson Chapel. The interment will take place in the Rock Creek Cemetery in Rock Creek, Minnesota. Funeral arrangements for Peggy Hawley of Rock Creek are entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Rush City, Olson Chapel.
