Gottlieb Schock

Mr. Gottlieb Schock of Jamestown, North Dakota; formerly of Kulm, North Dakota passed away Wednesday (1/14/15) at Ecumen of North Branch at the age 90. Gottlieb Schock was born, along with twin brother Bennie, on April 5, 1924 in rural McIntosh County, North Dakota to Christian and Rosina (Rott) Schock. He lived on the farm until age 17 when he attended the Welding School in the State Normal and Industrial School in Ellendale, North Dakota. Upon graduation he went to work in the Kaiser Ship Yards in Richmond, California. In 1942 he was drafted into the Army and served over three years during World War II on both the European and Pacific theaters. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman, two Battle Stars and the Bronze Star. (Later in life he received the Purple Heart Ribbon.) Gottlieb married Lorraine Hollan on November 9, 1946. They were blessed with one son, Tom, and two daughters, Joy and Polly. He was the Standard Oil agent in Millerton, Adams, and Kulm, North Dakota. He sold the oil business to work for the United States Postal Service in Kulm. They lived in Kulm for thirty years. During that time, he was appointed the Kulm City Auditor. In addition, he started an income tax practitioner business that continued for over forty-five years. He was an active member in Zion Lutheran Church and was involved in many service organizations including the Lions Club, Ambulance Corp., Kulm Development Corp., Fire Department, City Park District, and the American Legion. After retiring from the Postal Service, Gottlieb and Lorraine moved to Jamestown, North Dakota. They joined Trinity Lutheran Church and were active members for many years. Gottlieb was a man of many interests. He loved reading, traveling, cars, and music; and enjoyed fishing, golfing, and gardening/yard work. He also was a “handyman”. Gottlieb had a special love for “his family”, son Tom of Lindstrom, MN, daughters Joy (Rev. Laurie) O’Shea of Rush City, MN, and Polly (Rev. Dr. John) Snider, of West St. Paul, MN. He especially enjoyed his five grandchildren. Patrick O’Shea, Shanghai, China, Tom (Jenny) O’Shea, Blaine, MN, Meghan (Graham) McManamin, Anchorage, AK, Jessica Snider, West St. Paul, MN and Julia (Mike) Nickerson, New York City, NY. He had four great grandchildren, Taylor, Jacob, Joshua O’Shea and Bailee McManamin, siblings Arthur Schock, Maggie (Harry) Bertsch, Elmer (Darlene) Schock all of Ellendale, North Dakota, Arvin (Irene) Schock of Modesto, CA; Sisters-in-law Marie Schock of Jamestown, North Dakota, Elaine Schock of Lodi, CA and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Christian & Rosina (Rott) Schock, wife Lorraine (Hollan), siblings Henry, Fred, Ida, Bertha and twin brother Ben. Rev. Kristina Weber will officiate a funeral for Gottlieb, Monday (1/19/15) at 3:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church; 523 4th Ave SE, Jamestown, ND with a time of visitation and reviewal one hour prior at the church. Memorials may be directed to: Lutheran World Relief. The interment will take place Tuesday 10:00 am at the Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND.
