Richard Nicholas Hansen

November 26, 1922 — February 10, 2015

Richard Hansen of Rush City, passed away at Gracepoint Crossing Care Center in Cambridge, on February 10, 2015 at the age of 92. Richard was born November 26, 1922 to Siegfried & Cecelia Hansen in Magnolia, Minnesota in Murray County. He was the oldest of twelve children: Richard, Viola, Harvey, Frances, Walter, Raymond, Barbara, Leon, Eugene, Ronald, Bernard and Sharon. He was born to the farm life, was a top hand his entire life, and he was able to graduate from a small country school in the 8th grade. Richard enlisted in the United States Army on March 21, 1946 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on September 21, 1947. He married Joyce LaVerle Dickey on January 21, 1949. Richard and Joyce farmed near Woodstock, Minnesota for several years, then moved to Roseville, Michigan and lived there for eight years. They returned to Minnesota where they bought a small farm near Braham, and they purchased the Stark Store and ran it for several years in the mid 1970's. In 1989 they moved to Rush City, where they resided until Richard moved to the nursing home. Richard had a love for others, enjoyed caring for all animals, plants and sharing his time with those who knew him. He gave of himself in many ways; as a foster parent to 6 children, delivering Meals on Wheels, donating blood for the Red Cross, visiting the elderly at the Rush City nursing facility where the residents looked forward to him coming to call bingo and help them play their cards. He also called bingo at the Senior Dining Center in Rush City. Richard was a member of the Rush City American Legion Post #93 and the Minnesota Draft Horse Association. He always had a joke to share, enjoyed a good laugh, and as many friends and relatives could tell you he had a heart of gold. "Big Richard," "we know you", we will miss you. He is survived by his children: Laurie (Larry) Gebert of Rush City, Robert Hansen of East Bethel, Luanne Hansen-Hochstatter of Isanti; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; 6 foster children, brothers: Walter, Leon, Eugene, Ronald and Bernard; sisters: Frances, Barbara and Sharon; and numerous friends and relatives; Richard is preceded in death by his parents Siegfrid & Cecelia (Wiese) Hansen, his beloved wife Joyce, children: Lennis Hansen, Richard Hansen, Kathleen Hansen, and Carol Hansen; grandson Michael Gebert, brothers: Harvey Hansen, Raymond Hansen and his sister Viola Miller.
