Mavor Isabella Nelson

Mavor Nelson, age 86 of Brainerd, formerly of Rush City and Bertha, passed away March 2, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society-Bethany, Brainerd, MN. Mavor was born August 22, 1928 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Claus Tony and Margaret (Morris) Skiby. She married Elmer H. Nelson on April 25, 1953. In 1959 they moved to a farm north of Harris, Minnesota. Mavor spent over 20 years employed at Plastech Research in Rush City. During this time she was active in the Harris American Legion and First Lutheran Church of Harris. An avid reader, Mavor spent much time at the Rush City Public Library. She was also very concerned about people less fortunate than herself and volunteered her time at the Used-a-Bit Shop. After retiring from Plastech, Mavor moved to Bertha, Minnesota to live with her son Tommy. While attending the Eagle Bend Senior Center Mavor started knitting mittens. After her children had grown up, she thought she was done making mittens. People brought in yarn for her to make mittens and she became known as the "Mitten Lady". She knitted mittens for Head Start, Faith Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend and WIC programs, knitting 200 pair a year. In 2006, Mavor moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Brainerd and lived there until her passing. Mavor is survived by her daughters: Margaret (Craig) Mold of Rush City, Carol Wright of Rush City and Linda (Dick) Claypool of Bemidji; daughter-in-law Linda Nelson of Swan River, grandchildren: André Mold of Rush City; Erica (Adam) Jeffery of Maidenbower, England; Jennifer Hahn of New Ulm; Stephanie Wright of Rush City; Tanya (Tim) Smith of Cambridge; Rachel Erickson of Minneapolis; Krystal (Tim) Watts of Eveleth; Kourtney (Chad) Rudduck of Bartlesville, OK; Jimmy (Toni) Nelson of Longville, MN and great-grandchildren Evelyn, Landon, Lennox, Alexandra, Molly, Lily and Sequora; daughter-in-law Linda Nelson, sister, Sue Oman, brother-in-law Bernie Burebe and nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by parents Claus Tony and Margaret (Morris) Skiby; husband, Elmer; son Tommy; great-grandson Grayson Watts; sisters, Anna Marie Skiby, Tonetta Alford and Jacqueline Burebe; A private family remembrance service will be held in the spring at Sunrise Cemetery.
