Lillian Marie Dahl Hjelm passed away July 21 at Haven House Assisted Living Home at Cambridge, MN at the age of 88.
Lillian was born to Ernest & Ida (Christianson) Dahl at East Rock Creek on April 4, 1927 and shared her childhood years with brothers Vern and Wendell and sister Helen growing up on the farm their Swedish grandparents built. She attended McKay School and Rush City High School where she graduated in 1944.
Soon after graduating she started work at the Rush City Bakery and married Kenneth Hjelm on October 20, 1945 at Rush City. She lived in the Rush City area most of her life and worked at Rush City Locker, Dahl Brothers Produce, Co-op Store and Control Data where she was a computer assembler for approximately 23 years before she retired in 1988. In retirement she worked part-time for Lake Superior Laundry at Pine City and Bohaty Hardware of Rush City.
Lillian liked the outdoors and was an avid flower gardener. She took great pride in the country home on Pine Lake near Rush Point where she lived for over fifty-six years before moving to Haven House at Cambridge in 2013. She liked nothing more than spending time with family, traveling with friends and watching the wildlife from her home. She was always busy baking, cooking, sewing, crocheting and weaving and liked to enter her needle arts at the County Fair. She served as a 4-H Leader and was a long-time member of Calvary Lutheran Church and Rush Point Leisure Club.
She is survived by two sons: James Hjelm of Rush City and Jonathon (Barbara) Hjelm of Braham, foster son Martin LaBelle of Minneapolis, five grandchildren Jean (Michael) Ysbrand of Maple Grove, Patrick (Dee) Hjelm of St. Michael, Kelly (Terry) Nelson of Cambridge, Jeremy (Melanie) Hjelm of Lakeville and Jenell O'Brien of Plymouth, sister Helen Johnston of Rush City, sister-in-law Leona Chapin of Pine City, special friend Clayton Johnson of Cambridge and seven great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth and two brothers Vern and Wendell Dahl.
Rev. Keith Kolzow will officiate a celebration of Lillian's life; 2:00 PM Tuesday (7/28/15) at the Calvary Lutheran Church of Rush Point with visitation and reviewal Monday evening from 5-8 pm at the Olson Chapel in Rush City and one hour prior to the service at church.
The interment will be in the Calvary Lutheran Northview Cemetery at Rush Point.
