Jason Barrett passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at his home in Rock Creek at the age of 57.
Jason Wyatt Barrett was born to Ernie and Sally (Nelson) Barrett on September 30, 1958 in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1959, he and his family moved to central Minnesota. Jason attended school in both North Branch and Cambridge. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Army; he earned his GED while stationed in Colorado. He was also stationed in Germany.
Earlier in his life Jason was employed with Old Dutch and the State Hospital, however, for the last 30+ years he had been a mail carrier, starting out in Harris and later in Taylors Falls. He loved shopping in Taylors Falls at the Market Place and Menards, because he always had cooking or home projects in the works.
Jason was the organizer, he planned the family’s time together, whether it was a bar-b-que or a bonfire he made sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Jason mastered many games and was very competitive; playing cards and cribbage or winning trophies shooting pool. He loved Mexican food, telling stories and spending time with the grandchildren.
To say Jason was an avid sports fan and outdoors man would be an understatement. He had season tickets for the Minnesota Vikings in their new stadium where there is a plaque with his family’s names on it. April loved joining him at the football games. It wasn’t only football, he went to Twins games too. He loved everything about the outdoors; fishing, hunting, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling to the Lake of Woods, Canada and most recently to the Florida Keys where he and Laura experienced deep sea fishing. Jason was also proficient at bow hunting and hunted Elk in Colorado and Caribou in Alaska.
When he wasn’t watching a game, hunting or fishing he could be found on his way to Sturgis on his Harley or working on the Barrett Hobby Farm; making apple wine, tending to his bees or building a chicken coop.
Jason rarely sat still, he built an addition and deck on his house, remodeled his office or "man cave" as he liked to call it. When he started a project or learned a new skill he wanted to master it no matter what it was. He did the work of five men as he always thought he wasn’t accomplishing enough.
He lived life to the fullest and on his terms, Jason loved his family and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Laura Barrett of Rock Creek, children: Jason Barrett Jr. of Osceola, Wisconsin, Amanda Barrett of Brainerd, NaTrisha Handt and April Handt of Pine City, grandchildren: Jade, Elizabeth, Mariah, Olivia, Gavin and Connor, siblings: Angela Laurie of Fargo, North Dakota, Rhonda (Mike) Thompson of Stacy, Jarod (Kathy) Barrett of North Branch, Susan (James) Rice of Wyoming, Valorie (Kevin Andrews) Shepherd of Rochester, many nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ernie & Sally Barrett and son Brian Barrett.
A celebration of Jason's Life will take place June 4, 2016 from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Full Moon in Stark. The interment of Jason's ashes is scheduled for Friday, June 3rd at 10:30 AM at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis with military honors. We will meet at Assembly Area # 4
