Ione Frances Stumne

December 21, 1925 — June 4, 2016

Ione Frances Stumne passed away peacefully Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Scandia House in Pine City at the age of 90. Ione was born to Tracy and Florence (Francis) Davis on December 21, 1925 in Claremont, Minnesota. She was the youngest of five children; brothers Stanley, Warren and Jim and her sister Ethel. She was a self-proclaimed tomboy and had many childhood adventures trying to keep up her older brothers. In 1933, Ione’s mother was remarried to Merle Maben and the family moved to a farm in Forest City, Iowa. In 1940, the family moved to the west side of Pokegama Lake in Pine City, where they made their home for the next 60 years. Shortly after moving to the Pine City area Ione met Arnold “Arnie”Stumne the “love of her life”. Arnie and Ione were married February 7, 1943. Jack and Becky were born prior to Arnie being drafted into WWII in 1944. This was a challenging time for Ione, raising two children while Arnie and her brothers fought in the war. Thankfully Arnie and Ione’s brothers returned home safely. Ione and Arnie continued to grow their family with the births of Mike and Steve. Over the next 35 years, they raised their family and worked together as a family on a 160 acre farm. In order to make ends meet Arnie took a second job at Land O’Lakes thus leaving many day-to-day chores to Ione. Life wasn’t all work; she had many hobbies and interests; playing cards, gardening, making ceramics and greeting cards. She cherished her family above all and lived the motto “family is not an important thing, it’s everything”. In 1980, after farming all their life, they retired and built a house across the road from their farm, where they spent the next 13 years. They enjoyed life together; traveling, gardening, and spending time with the grandchildren until Arnie’s unexpected passing in 1993. Ione lived with family for the next several years and eventually moved to Westchester Village. She developed many meaningful friendships and spent her time visiting, watching the birds and traveling. Ione’s health began to suffer, her spirts remained high as she once again moved in with family and then to the Scandia House, assisted living community. Ione will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. Iona is survived by her children Mike Stumne of Pine City, Steve (Val) Stumne of Wyoming, and Becky (Rick) True of Isanti, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Mary Davis of Pine City, brother-in-law Don (Eldrine) Stumne, many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Arnie Stumne, son Jack Stumne, parents Tracey & Florence (Francis) Davis, sister Ethel Mattison, brothers Stanley, Warren, and Jim Davis, and her traveling companion Delores Davis.
