Kathryn "Kay" Sharon Feist

Kathryn “Kay” Feist passed away peacefully Sunday, October 2, 2016 in Pine City at the home of her loving daughter Karen at the age of 78. Kay was born on February 25, 1938 to Ralph and Kathryn (Barnes) Kane in Oakes, North Dakota. Kay graduated and received her Teacher’s Certificate from Valley City State College, formerly known as the Valley City State Teachers College in Valley City, North Dakota. It was at a college dance that she met her future husband Arnold Feist. In 1959, Kay and Arnie were married in Oakes, North Dakota. Two years later Elizabeth “Beth” was born. She and Arnie loved music, dancing and later in life traveling together. In 1965 the family moved to Pine City, Minnesota, Arnie was hired as one of the first teachers at the new Pine Area Vocational School, which is now Pine Technical and Community College. Their second daughter Karen was born in 1967. Kay was employed with the Braham Elementary School District for thirty years. She worked as a teacher, librarian, and chapter one lead teacher until her retirement. As a true librarian, Kay was an avid reader. Throughout her adult life she enjoyed playing the piano and playing bridge with the ladies. For many years she was involved with the Pine City Women's Lions Club and Red Hat Society. Her two grandchildren enhanced her life greatly, she loved being a grandmother. Kay is survived by her daughters Elizabeth "Beth" (Scott) Streed of Medina and Karen Zmuda of Pine City; grandchildren Laurel and Aaron Streed of Medina; sister-in-law Beverly Townsend of California. She is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Kathryn Kane; her husband Arnold Feist and her brother Jim Kane. There will be a Celebration of Kay’s Life: 10:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. This is a time for family and friends to gather and share their love and memories of Kay.
