Lawrence Roubinek was born June 3, 1925 in Pine City Township to Joseph and Anna (Tone) Roubinek. He grew up on the family farm and attended Milburn School through the eighth grade. Growing up, his first car was a 1934 Ford V8.
In February of 1945, Lawrence was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Missouri, Georgia, Texas, and California. He was honorably discharged from the military in December of 1946.
On December 4, 1949 Lawrence married Clara Smack. Three sons were born to the union, Lary Jo in 1950, Leslie in 1955, and Launie in 1958. Lawrence and Clara were divorced later that year.
Lawrence worked for several years at Lowry Lumber Company in Minneapolis. In1953, following his brother Richard’s induction into the Army, their dad asked him to come home to help operate the farm, which he did. After about a year and a half of working on the farm, Lawrence went back to the Twin Cities where he found a job driving a truck for Ready Mix, which he continued to do for the rest of his working years. In 1987 he retired and moved back to Pine City.
His favorite outdoor sport was fishing. In his middle years he went to dances, including those televised by Channel 11. His later years were spent traveling to Texas. Following his retirement and move to Pine City, he was well known for his enjoyment of walking to various destinations around town and for his flashy shirts!
Lawrence spent his last four and one-half years as a resident of Lakeside Nursing Home in Pine City where he died on January 10, 2010. He is survived by his sons, Lary Jo and Leslie, both of Minneapolis, and Launie of Utah; sister: Emma Haug of Rush City, MN; brother: Richard Roubinek of Pine City; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, James, and his sisters, Albina Scott-Russell, Rosie Broze, and Martha Spinler.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, 2010 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City with the Reverend Vicki VanderVegt officiating. Music was provided by organist Glenna Reierson and soloist Adrienne Roubinek. Casket bearers were Raymond Roubinek, Tim Roubinek, Tom Roubinek, Norman Scott-Russell, Jerome Plessel, and Cliff Theline. Interment was at the Czech National Cemetery in Pine City.
