Jerome “Homer” Charles Shatava was born December 19, 1951 in Rush City, Minnesota to Charles and Frances Louise (Weis) Shatava. He was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Jerome attended the rural Hustletown School and graduated from Pine City High School in 1969. After high school he attended Pine City Vocational technical school for one year in Auto mechanics. His first job was with Schunicht’s Chevrolet Garage in Pine City. He also worked for local construction contractors as a heavy equipment operator. He later went to work in the Twin Cities for Gresser Construction Co. At this time he joined the Operating Engineers Local # 49 union. He later went to work for Charles McCrossin Construction Co. and later Belair Construction Co. as a dozer operator until he became ill. He was well known for his driving and operating skills. He took great pride in his work.
He enjoyed the hobbies of motorcycle riding, ATV and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed working and driving his skid-loader on his hobby farm as well as helping out on his parents family farm. His first new car was a 1970 Chevelle. He enjoyed working on it and keeping it in tip-top shape as well as his first new 4X4 1973 Ford pickup.
Jerome died this last Saturday, May 15, at Lakeside Nursing Home in Pine City where he had resided for the past several years due to ill health. He is survived by his brothers Leonard and his wife Patricia of White Bear Lake, LeRoy and his wife Moni of Pine City and Ronald of Apple Valley. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Frances Shatava.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 19th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father David Forsman officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 18th from 5-7 pm with Prayer Service at 7 pm. Visitation will also continue on Wednesday morning 1 hour before the service at the church commons.
