Carl Michael Lindstrom passed away on the evening of Tuesday, July 23, 2024, after a six-month illness.
"Michael" was born on January 26, 1944 to Carl E. and Florence (Hedrich) Lindstrom at the New Ulm Hospital. He was joined three years later by his only sibling, Gretchen Michele, and together they grew up in the home their father had built on North Carver Street in Winthrop. Even as a youngster, Michael was already interested in art, antiques and collectibles.
Michael graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1966 and became an Interior Designer for Dayton's, where he was employed of many years. He expanded his interest in Interior Design by acquiring a Master's degree and becoming a college professor of art and interior design. A brief sabbatical in Portugal inspired him to create a series of paintings he titled "Rooftops of Portugal." His teaching career included time at Indiana University, Iowa State University and the University of North Dakota. His career culminated at Mankato State University as the Emeritus Professor of Interior Design.
After retirement, he continued living at the family home in Winthrop, where he increased his many collections of art, crystal, silverplate, etc. His many cats remained an important part of his life. (One even had her own credit card!) He also continued to serve occasionally as an organist at several local churches.
Michael is survived by his sister Gretchen (Paul) Sanders; nieces Deborah (Randal) Erickson and Margaret "Peggy" (Aaron) Anderson; nephew Dr. Peter Carl (Jada) Sanders and their families. Close relationships were also enjoyed with many cousins and their families as well as many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Florence Lindstrom.
At Michael's request, no funeral services will be held. A private family graveside service will be conducted at a later date.
