Donald Schultz Sr. passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at United Hospital in St. Paul at the age of 84.Donald Frederick Schultz was born January 22, 1934, the oldest of three children born to Fred and Margaret (Coveny) Schultz in St. Paul, Minnesota.Don lived in St. Paul, North St. Paul, Cross Lake and Pine City. While living in Cross Lake, his family ran a small resort for a few years before returning to St. Paul in 1947. Don attended Mechanic Arts High School. In 1950, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. On February 5, 1953, Don was discharged from the Army and returned home where he worked at the Paper Calmenson Company as a steel worker.On November 3, 1962, Don married Joan Wilsev at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Paul. They had three children: Debra, Dianne and Donald Jr. During the early years of their marriage, Don coached boys basketball, football, hockey and baseball. Don was a former Boy Scout and was active in scouting with his son during his youth. Don made many backyard skating rinks for his children to enjoy and for many years he played Santa Claus for children's parties. Don was an avid fisherman, enjoyed woodworking and making items for family and friends. Don liked to tell jokes and was always looking for a new audience to tell them to. Don was a recovering alcoholic with 37 years of sobriety and prior to moving to Pine City, he was active in the St. Paul Alamo Club. After moving to Pine City in 1991, Don and Joan found their church home at the Hustletown Community Church. The annual church picnic and baptism was held at their home on the Snake River for many years.Don loved and cared about his family and especially enjoyed being a Grandpa. Don will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family and many friends.Don is survived by his wife Joan Schultz of Pine City; children Don (Cindy) Schultz Jr. of Forest Lake and Debra (James) Warren of Maplewood; grandchildren Jens Warren, Mason Schultz and Maurice Cole Jr.; great-grandchildren Mariah, Trey-Reece, Duke and Prince; and sister Carol (Guy) Glidden of Wichita, Kansas.He is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Margaret Schultz; daughter Dianne Schultz; and brother Edward Schultz.Pastor Bruce Thompson will officiate at funeral services for Don: 11 AM; Friday, February 23, 2017 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. A time of visitation and reviewal is planned for one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
