Douglas Peterson

September 4, 1947 — July 18, 2018

Douglas "Doug" Peterson of Rush City passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Cambridge Medical Center in Cambridge at the age of 70.

Douglas James Peterson was born September 4, 1947 to Everett and Angie (Ropotar) Peterson in Rush City. He was the youngest of two children.

Doug attended school in Rush City graduating in 1965, much time was spent playing baseball and helping out at the family owned Gambles store and hardware store in Rush City. Doug graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a political science degree.

After various jobs, the Peterson family purchased the Rush Lake Resort on East Rush Lake in 1982. Doug was the co-owner and operator with his brother Ron and tended to the Resort business until his death. The Resort was not only a business but a gathering spot for fishermen, friends, campers and neighbors. Many lifelong friendships were formed at the Resort and his degree came in handy for the political banter. The Resort was the place for lively conversation of the Vikings or Twins or just good music and a cold beer.

Doug managed the Rush City Summer Recreation Program for over 10 years, primarily with baseball. The “Stars of Tomorrow“ baseball tournament in LaCrosse, WI was a highlight for Doug and the local boys. They finished 5th of 64 teams and traveled the farthest and were awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy. Doug also managed the Rush City Eagles Town Team for over 10 years and was a star player.

Passionate about sports and helping coach and mentor youth, Doug coached from the age of 19 to 45.  He spent thousands of hours volunteering his time coaching, including the years he spent with the Rush City High School softball team coaching pitchers.

All will remember Doug's motto: "One more and I gotta go!"

Doug is survived by his brother Ron Peterson (Marilyn Fessenden) of Rush City, cousins Anthony "Tony" (Lois) Kochevar of New Prague, Robert Carpenter of Wisconsin, Rev. Jeri (LeRoy) Bergquist of Rush City, Dr. Greg (Joanne) Peterson of Fergus Falls, many close friends and lake family.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents Everett and Angela "Angie" Peterson.

Pastor Jeri Bergquist will officiate at Dougs Celebration of Life: 11 AM; Monday, July 23, 2018 at the Olson Funeral Chapel in Rush City.  A time of visitation and reviewal is planned from 4-7 PM on Sunday (7/22/18) and also one hour prior to the service on Monday all at the Olson Funeral Chapel.  The interment will take place in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Rush City.  A potluck reception to remember Doug will follow at the Rushseba Town Hall in Rush City.
