Gene Patzoldt passed away March 16th, 2022, at Welia Hospital in Mora at the age of 82. He was born November 23, 1939, the second child of eight children to Arnold and Ella (Marquardt) Patzoldt in Pine City. He grew up on the family dairy farm, learning early the value of hard work.
It was at a local dance with friends, one of which would become a future brother-in-law, that he met Beverly Davidson. They were married January 4th, 1964, and made their home east of Pine City. Gene worked road construction for many years, operated heavy equipment, while simultaneously farming. With crops to be planted and harvested, feeder hogs to be sold and a herd of Charolais and black and red Angus, there was no shortage of work to be done. Gene was an avid outdoorsman and passed his love of hunting, especially deer hunting, on to his children and grandchildren. Gene was a successful trapper and enjoyed “running” his trap line for red fox in the winter months, the elusive coyote, and heaven help the varmint skunk that set foot on his farm! He enjoyed trips to Canada fishing, the Dakotas pheasant hunting, and in later years an Alaskan trip with Bev.
The teamwork of Gene and Bev’s 58 years together solidly built their farm from the ground up with hard manual labor, business sense and honest decency. Over the years thousands of hogs were born, weaned, raised and sold at markets in Mora and South St Paul, and making time and hosting many graduation and wedding parties.
Gene had a deep love for his family. He always made time for a grandchild, especially to make sure they knew that he loved them and to take part in a birthday celebration. Many Sunday afternoons, brothers Gene and Arnie could be found in Bev’s kitchen waiting for baked goods to cool, with a hot cup of coffee ready, catching up on how the calves and the corn were growing. Gene's giant smile and twinkling eyes reflected the good character within. He was always willing to poke fun or rib, he loved a good story and a laugh. His strong faith gave him a sense of calm and ease. A true man of peace. We were so blessed to be able to call him “Dad, Pops, Papa, Grandpa.”
At the time of his passing, Gene was survived by his loving wife Bev Patzoldt; children: Pam McCormick, Polly (Craig) Dolby, Mike (Rhonda) Patzoldt, Barb (Roblee) Patzoldt/Johnson; grandchildren: Matt and Pam, Jarad and Megan, Brandon and Katie, Breckan, Emma and Charlie, Madeline, Cody and Nia, Brady and Brinn; great-grandchildren: Alex, Tyler, Aiden, Arthur; brothers Arnie Patzoldt, Dennis Patzoldt; sister Ellen Patzoldt; many other relatives and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Ella Patzoldt; sister Judy; brothers Harold, Robert, David; son-in-law Kevin McCormick; nephews Travis, John, and niece Bonnie.
