Gladys Schumacher passed away Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Lakeside Health & Rehab Center in Pine City at the age of 91.
Gladys Laverne Rydlund was born September 26, 1928 to Charles and Myrtle (Rudquist) Rydlund in Rush City, Minnesota. She was an only child and raised on the Rudquist family farm east of Rock Creek. Gladys attended the McKay Country School through the 8th grade and later the Rush City High School graduating in 1946. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After graduation she moved to Pine City and began working as a telephone operator for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was employed with Northwestern Bell for 31 years, retiring in 1981.
Gladys met Eugene Gerald Schumacher in the fall of 1947 at a Halloween dance at the Topic Ballroom in Pine City. They were engaged that Christmas Eve and married August 17, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Pine City. To this union five children were born; John, Gerald, Kathleen, Edward and Dean.
In the summer of 1963, Gene and Gladys purchased the family lake cabin at Bass Lake west of Sandstone. They created many happy and fun memories for family and friends. They traveled to California to visit Gene’s sister Anna, her husband Donald Skalicky and family. There were trips to Texas to visit their son Dean and family. Gladys was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Pine City. After Gene passed away in 1995 she became active in church’s quilting group. She enjoyed going to casinos and playing bingo with longtime friends John and Carol Skluzacek. Gladys most treasured the time she spent with family and friends. She will be greatly missed.
In 2015, Gladys moved to Golden Horizons Assisted Living. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with special friend Rose Struss and other residents. In September of 2018, she moved to Lakeside Health & Rehab where she was well cared for until her death.
We know she is now with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her dear husband Gene and someday we will all be together again.
Gladys is survived by her children John (Janet) Schumacher, Gerald Schumacher, Kathleen (Brent) Jahnz, Edward (Julie) Schumacher all of Pine City and Dean (Laura) Schumacher of Garland, Texas; 9 grandsons; 2 granddaughters; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sister-in-law Anna Skalicky; niece, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
