John Sylvester Speten

John passed away peacefully at his home in Mora, Minnesota on Friday, March 31, 2023 at the age of 78.

John was born December 18, 1944 to Ruth Sylvia Speten in St. Paul, Minnesota.

John grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School, class of 1963 and then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. John was also a proud member of the White Earth Nation.

John met his soul mate, Theresa, and they married in 1988 and John also became the father to Theresa’s children, Deanna and Aaron. John worked as a driver for Red Aarow for many years and he knew the Twin Cities inside and out.  If you ever needed directions, he was your go to. 

As a family, they lived in White Bear Lake for many years and upon retirement and the kids being grown, they moved to Mora, MN. During retirement, he and Theresa enjoyed taking trips to see the western and midwest states, taking special care and pride in their home and just being retired. 

John always enjoyed visiting with family, friends and acquaintances and he was always telling a silly joke or being funny even in his last days. He will be missed by many.

John is survived by children; Deanna (Patrick) Fulweiler of Grantsburg, WI and Aaron Wagenius of Hinckley, MN; grandchildren: Kelsey, Ryan, Kyle and Cameron; sister Michelene "Bunny" Miner: many nieces, nephews, cousins and his Aunt Ona.

He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Speten; wife Theresa Speten; brothers Ardyce "Tonto" Van Wert, Dennis Van Wert, Arthur "Al" Speten, Kurt Speten; sister Dianne "Dolly" Speten.

Funeral services for John: 2:00 PM; Tuesday (4/11) at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City.  A time of visitation for friends and family will be held 1 hour prior to the service.  The interment will take place in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
