Pine City

June Jacobson passed away June 23, 2024 at M Health Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, Minnesota at the age of 87 due to complications from pneumonia.

June Matilda (Bettinger) Jacobson was born June 8, 1937 in Worthington, Minnesota to Charles and Myrtle Bettinger, residing in Lake Park, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children and the only sibling to be born in a hospital. Her family moved to Minnesota and she grew up on the family farm in Rock Creek, Minnesota and attended the Meadowbank Country School. She attended Pine City High School, graduating in the Class of 1955. Upon graduation, June moved to Minneapolis and worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass. Attending a dance at the Topic Ballroom in Pine City, she met Herbert Jacobson and on June 16, 1956 they were united in marriage at the Pine City United Methodist Church.

Herb and June purchased the family farm and lived south of Rock Creek for 25 years. Herb and June raised two children, Tim and Jody. They sold the farm in 1981 and moved to Pine City. Herb was diagnosed with ALS in 1986 and passed away in 1990. In June’s teenage years she worked at Jimmy’s Café and returned to Nicoll’s Café later in life, she also worked at Lee’s Apron in Rush City. Through these experiences she gained many lifelong friends. She retired in 2001 from Pine City School District after 9 years as the nurse’s assistant.

June enjoyed traveling and took many trips with her family and friends including family visits to Lake Okoboji and Vinton, Iowa, Charleston, Illinois and Mesa, Arizona; trips to Nashville, Branson, Washington DC, Las Vegas, and New York.

June lived in her home in Pine City for 40 years and moved to Northern Pines Assisted Living in Pine City in August 2021. For skilled nursing care, she moved to Ecumen North Branch in December 2023. She enjoyed visits from family and friends for coffee and great conversation as well as long phone calls with loved ones.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and embroidery. She was a member of the Pine City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Rock Creek Homemakers. Upon the closing of the United Methodist Church, June became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pine City.

June is remembered for caring for others with her father as they offered rides to Senior Citizens for grocery trips or medical appointments, but especially her husband during his illness and her mother during her elderly years.

June would say she waited until age 70 and 72 for her two grandsons to be born, Grant and Evan. She enjoyed spending time with them, enjoying ice cream treats and root beer floats, going to the Pine City Parade and especially watching them grow up and all their activities, sport teams and academic achievements.

June is survived by her son Timothy (Karen) Jacobson and grandson Evan of St. Louis Park; daughter Jodene (Lance) Witter and grandson Grant of Plymouth; sister-in-law Pauline Bettinger of Vinton, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins; many friends and great neighbors.

June was preceded in death by her parents Charles Wellington and Myrtle Bettinger; husband Herbert Everett Jacobson; sister Mae (Rufus) Manthey; brothers Charles Wellington II (Edna) Bettinger and Robert Bettinger; and brother-in-law Howard Lindstrom.

Pastor Rob Spahr will officiate at funeral services for June: 11 AM; Friday, June 28, 2024 with visitation one hour prior at the First Presbyterian Church in Pine City. The interment will take place in Birchwood Cemetery, Pine City.
