Shirley Ingvalson slipped away in the early morning of Friday, May 17, 2024, at the age of 91, to be with her Lord and to reunite with many loved ones. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
She was born Shirley Louise Weis on November 6, 1932 to Carl and Louise (Mohr) Weis in Rock Creek, Minnesota, in a farm house, delivered by her Granny Mohr.
She attended a one room school house for her younger years, graduating in 1951 with straight A's all through school.
On August 8, 1951 at the United Methodist Church in Pine City, she married her sweetheart Donald Cross. They made their home on the west side of Pokegama Lake on a dairy farm. She loved to cook, bake, and can her own produce. She loved to bake fresh bread for weekend breakfast.
She had a wide variety of flowers and gardens. She also loved to feed and watch many different kinds of birds - suet for woodpeckers, thistle for canaries, grape jelly for orioles. She would also put sweet corn and a salt lick out for the deer. They became the best of friends.
She loved George Jones and she was able to see him in concert. She was a fun person with a great sense of humor, but you didn't want to make her mad - she was proud to be 100% German. She was one tough lady. If a person can be half as tough, they can be happy. She liked to joke saying you can always tell a German because you can't tell them anything.
She would not hesitate to let you know, she didn't drink, smoke or chew, and didn't associate with those that did. She would tell it like it was whether you liked it or not. Per her daughter Stephanie, last year when she was very sick she could hear her Mom's voice telling the nurse, "Well you do know she is only half German."
Shirley is survived by her daughters Stephanie Novak and Lynda Nelson; grandchildren Jim (Tammy) Cross, Brad Cross, Colton Novak, David Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Katie Karnick; daughter-in-law Melinda Cross; step-granddaughter Tina Rutledge.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Louise Weis; husbands Donald Cross and Kenneth Ingvalson; son Gary Cross; granddaughter Mary Hard; and great-grandson Timothy Hughes.
Funeral services for Shirley: 11:00 AM; Saturday, June 8, 2024 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City, with a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Birchwood Cemetery in Pine City.
