Timothy Jerome Ritter

April 5, 1956 — December 11, 2024

Minneapolis

Timothy Ritter passed away at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale on December 11, 2024 at the age of 68.

Timothy Jerome Ritter was born on April 5, 1956, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Frank and Kathleen (Cummings) Ritter.  Growing up in Inver Grove Heights, Tim’s childhood was filled with hardworking adventures. From running a paper route his sister Monica would assist with to selling worms on Concord Street, he developed an entrepreneurial spirit early in life.

Tim left high school to pursue a career in construction, finding his passion as a heavy equipment operator for the 49ers. It was a job he not only excelled at but also took immense pride in, often proclaiming that he was the best at what he did. His dedication to his work mirrored his larger-than-life personality and unrelenting determination.

Tim was married twice in his life. While his second marriage did not result in children, his first marriage to Julie Horning brought him two sons, Shane and Blaine, born in the 1970s. After the marriage ended, Tim and Shane briefly ventured to Texas before returning home to Minnesota. In the years that followed, Tim welcomed another daughter, Sherri, though he never married her mother.

In the 1990s, Tim’s life grew fuller when he met Barbara Nordby. Although they never married, their partnership was one of love and devotion. Together, they welcomed two more children, Cain and Jane, completing a family that was central to Tim’s heart and life.

Tim was known for his gruff personality—crabby, stern, and a bit grouchy—but those who knew him well understood the deep, soft heart that lay beneath. His love for his family was steadfast, and he worked tirelessly to support them, even as his health began to decline. His children, in turn, carried on his legacy by stepping up to help when he could no longer manage the work he loved so much.

Tim had a love for the outdoors that shaped much of his life. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or splitting wood to heat for five winters ahead, he found joy in the simplicity of nature. His connection to the land extended to his family’s property up north, where he spent countless hours working and creating memories.

Beyond his work ethic and love for the outdoors, Tim had a variety of hobbies that showcased his vibrant personality. He was an avid coin collector and gardener, known for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers that he used to make delicious salsa, chili, and applesauce. An animal lover at heart, Tim raised and sold fish under the name “Ritter’s Critters.” Among his beloved animals, his favorite were Bichon Frises, which he trained to perform tricks and beg for food, much to his delight.

Timothy Jerome Ritter was a proud, hardworking, and stubborn man who lived a full and remarkable life. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be cherished by his children, grandchildren, and all who loved him.

Rest in peace, Tim. Your legacy of strength and determination will live on in the hearts of those you touched.

Tim is survived by his partner Barb Nordby of Minneapolis; children Shane (Kendra) Ritter of Coon Rapids, Blaine (Cassie) Ritter of Elk River, Cain Ritter (Joelle Elvrum) of Minneapolis, Jane Ritter of Hinckley, Sherri (Nick) Marberry-Rutten of South St. Paul; grandchildren Autumn, Shane Jr., David, Daisy, Isabella; sister Monica Huebscher of South St. Paul; brother Dale Ritter of Bruno; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
